Phil Wilson's book is an introduction to MSI technology and includes some practical tips. It's primarily using Visual Studio .NET and Orca as tools.
Description from the publisher:
Virtually every book written for software developers stops when the program is
complete. Unfortunately, they leave out a critical part - creating the software
that installs the application, component or service you just wrote. For a
company building and shipping software, the installation might be the first time
the customer has seen the product or company, and the installation experience
will make a lasting impression one way or the other. An unreliable installation
will affect the customer's image of the overall software and company. This book
covers every aspect of using the Windows Installer - the underlying installer
technology in Windows.
Author Information
Phil Wilson - Phil graduated from the University of Aston, Birmingham, England,
with a BSc in Chemistry but preferred computers to test tubes and eventually

developed in MFC, ATL COM, Visual Basic, and C#. He has been involved in
installation design and technology for about eight years, and became a Microsoft
